A young Army caddie carries the American game into the war

The Foxhole Letters — synopsis image WORLD WAR II · 1942-1945

Private First Class Henry 'Hank' Cobb is nineteen the morning he loops his last bag at Augusta National before shipping out. The bag belongs to Bobby Jones. The Masters has been suspended. The fairways will run cattle by autumn. Before they part, the great amateur slips Hank a small leather-bound notebook and tells him to write everything down.

Hank carries that notebook through basic training at Fort Benning, through the cold mud of England, across the hedgerows of Normandy, and into a German POW camp where the prisoners scratch out a three-hole course inside the wire and putt with sock-stuffed balls. The letters he sends home — to his sister, to the pro shop boys, to Bobby Jones himself — become a quiet record of the American game when no one was sure it would survive.

As Hank moves closer and closer to the end of the war and a homecoming he can scarcely believe in, neither he nor the men reading his letters back home can see the part each will play in what comes next — the post-war boom that will remake American golf, and whether Hank will be there to see his first tee shot land on a fairway again.

I'm forty-three years old and I haven't sent my father anything he liked this much in twenty years. He reads each letter twice and then calls me.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the story last?
Twelve mailings over twelve months — one letter (or set of letters) arrives each month. The story is paced to unfold like a novel you live with for a year, not a binge you finish in a weekend.
When does my first letter ship?
You choose the date at checkout. We ship from Ohio every weekday. Pick a weekday up to six months out and we'll send the first mailing on that day, then monthly after.
Can I cancel or pause my subscription?
Yes. The monthly plan can be paused or canceled anytime from your account. The annual plan is one prepaid payment with no auto-renewal — you simply receive your twelve mailings.
Is this a good gift?
A great one. Many of our subscribers buy The Golf Letters for a father, grandfather, son, or close friend. We include a gift announcement card so the recipient knows what's coming each month.
What if I'm not happy with the first letter?
We offer a 30-day money-back guarantee. If the first mailing doesn't land the way we hope it will, write to us and we'll make it right.
Can I switch storylines later?
Yes. We're happy to swap you to a different storyline before your next mailing ships. Just send us a note and we'll handle the switch.
